APRIL 12 - 16 AT BANGOR PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
NO PACKETS GIVEN OUT DAY OF THE RACE.

¨ No alcohol will be allowed in any craft.
¨ No animals will be allowed in any craft.
¨ A minimum age of 12 years with an adult in the craft.
¨ Minimum age of 16 years without an adult.  (Must have consent of parent/guardian if under 18 years)
¨ Contestants in trouble will not be disqualified if they accept only enough help to get them and their boat ashore.
¨ No assistance on portages from people, wheels, etc. Craft must be in the water at all flat water check points. 
¨ Grab loops or six-foot ropes must be tied down or taped.
¨ Participants will be disqualified by race officials and/or sweep canoe if they feel that canoeist are not making an effort to race.
¨ Passing canoes have the right of way both in the water and on portages.
¨ Coast Guard approved, over the shoulder, correctly sized lifejackets are to be worn at all times.
¨ Identify your craft number at check points and finish line.
¨ Numbered vests are to be worn OVER  lifejackets at the bow of the boat.
¨ Any disqualified racers will surrender their numbered vests to safety   personnel.
¨ Kayakers and decked boaters must wear helmets.
¨ All racers in open canoes will use single blade paddles only. Racers in kayaks and other decked boats may use either single or double blade paddles.
¨ Kayakers using kayaks with exterior rigging should make sure such rigging is secured or removed in order to prevent snagging on limbs, trees, or other debris in the stream.
¨ Participants should not secure  paddles to wrist  or hands. 
¨ Rescue teams recommend that all race participants wear appropriate clothing due to the extreme cold water and air temperatures.
¨ Recommendations: wet or dry suit if you have one, or polypropylene fleece or wool clothing which will help to keep you warm even if it becomes wet. The worst thing to wear is cotton clothing (i.e. Jeans, T-shirt, sweat shirt/pants). Many people each year become severely hypothermic and require medical attention because they are not dressed properly.
¨ Awards Ceremony at approximately 2:30 pm at take out area.
** There WILL be bus transportation to and from take out area to Kenduskeag Village. 12:00noon to 3:00pm.
 
NEW RULES FOR 2021
¨ Must have face covering on until entering the stream.
¨ Staggered starting times based on class. 
¨ Racers will pick up their bibs, sticker and goody bag at the Parks and Recreation Center, April 12-16 (8:00 am—4:30 pm)
¨ Paddlers may not enter waiting area until 20 minutes prior to their designated start time.
¨ 90 or fewer paddlers per 30 minutes.
¨ NO WARMING TENT AT FINISH LINE...but there will be ToGo coffee and snacks available.  Sponsored by Darling's Agency

Rules and Guidelines (PLEASE READ)
  • A minimum age of 12 years old with and adult (18+) in the craft
  • Minimum age of 16 years old without an adult (must have consent of parent/guardian if under 18 years old)
  • FACE COVERING MUST BE WORN UNTIL ON THE STREAM
  • We will start 5 crafts per minute starting at 8:30 am / 9:00 am / 10:00 am depending on the class you are entered in.
  • No alcohol will be allowed in craft (participants will be disqualified and may be banned from future races if found)
  • THERE WILL BE SHUTTLE SERVICE FROM 11:30 - TO APPROX. 2:30 AT TAKE OUT AREA
  • No assistance on portages from people, wheels, etc. Craft must be in the water at all flat water check points.

  • No animals allowed in any craft
  • Participants will be disqualified by the sweep canoe if they feel an effort is not being made to race.

Classifications and Class information
  • The Race Staff reserves the right to determine participant's final race classification.
  • All canoes will meet "ACA WW Open Canoe Specifications".
  • Open Class: For race teams numbering 3 or more canoeists or for a craft that is not classified as a canoe or kayak. This class is also for racers who wish to propel their watercraft with something other than a paddle. (i.e. oars, or setting pole)
  • Recreation Class: Includes ANY CRAFT sold for general recreational use In general, ABS, polyethylene kayaks and canoes, as well as aluminum, or wood/canvas canoes.

What to wear and other info
  • Rescue teams recommend that ALL race participants wear appropriate clothing due to the extreme cold water temperatures as well as cold ambient air temperatures.
  • Recommended clothing includes: a wet suit or dry suit, polypropylene fleece or wool.
  • Worst to wear: cotton clothing (ie: jeans, T-shirt, sweat shirt/pants
  • You may become severely hypothermic and require medical attention if you are not wearing the proper clothing.
  • Try not to bring keys, cell phones or anything else you do not want to get wet or possibly lose in the boat with you.
